Swindon Monopoly due to be released in time for Christmas

monopoly swindon
Swindon is to get its own Monopoly Game Board. The game, which is due to go on sale in October, is being produced by gaming manufacturers Winning Moves.
Some of Swindon’s most popular landmarks including Lydiard Park and The Magic Roundabout are set to appear in the regional version of the game, in place of the London landmarks which feature on the original Monopoly Board.
Swindon’s railway heritage is set to play a big part in the board design and the game’s Community Chest and Chance cards will also have a local theme.
A Swindon Monopoly Facebook group has over four hundred members discussing which of our local landmarks should feature.
Several other Regional versions of the game are now on sale on the Winning Moves website, including Monopoly Cardiff and Monopoly Cornwall. The regional games are priced at £24.99.

Press Release via H&M

“I’ve always liked H&M’s focus on fun and affordable fashion. I really loved the concept we collaborated on to explore the different emotions of women represented by the four elements – fire, water, earth and wind. It was a beautiful shoot on a tropical island. It felt more like making a video than a commercial,” says Beyoncé.
“H&M’s summer campaign starring Beyoncé is an epic fantasy, with glamour, drama and also a sense of paradise. It was amazing to watch her on the shoot make it all look effortless – a quality that makes her such an icon for women around the world. The campaign is the essence of Beyoncé, and also the essence of H&M this summer,” says Donald Schneider, Creative Director, H&M.
“In the campaign Beyoncé is wearing the key pieces from H&M you need for life in the sun this summer,” says Ann-Sofie Johansson, Head of Design, H&M. “There’s the perfect bodycon dress, as well as a flowing sun dress that makes a real statement. And of course there are the bikinis, especially the fringed bikini. What makes these pieces even more special is that Beyoncé herself had input into the design, and they are full of her own personal style.”
The summer campaign features swimwear and beachwear pieces as well as a tie-dye bikini from this summer’s H&M for Water collection. 25% of sales from the H&M for Water collection will be donated to H&M for WaterAid. Since 2002, H&M’s initiative with WaterAid has raised £2,650,000.
The campaign images were shot in Nassau in the Bahamas by photographers Inez & Vinoodh, while the commercial was directed by Jonas Åkerlund. The commercial highlights the opposing nature of the four basic elements and will be available to view online in its entirety, with edited versions for TV. The commercial also features a new song from Beyoncé, Standing On The Sun, which will be available worldwide online and hm.com beginning May.

Swindon's Skate Scene

Check this awesome video edited by Tom Price showing some of talent the Swindon skate scene has to offer.

The video was shot at ATB Skate Warehouse in Swindon who have been big supporters in the SNAPS movement. For those of you that don't know, the ATBShop Skate Warehouse is Swindon's only indoor skate park. It houses a showroom, workshop and a cafe where youths can hang out. It has proved to be a huge success, with many skateboarders, in-line skaters and scooter riders using it every night.
The skate park is split into two sections, a street section with moveable ramps and the main park which consists of a 5ft mini ramp, a 7ft 6in roll-in and a 13ft ‘shoot the moon’ ramp.
It's places like this as well as causes like SNAPS and the many forms of skating talent we have here that are keeping Swindon's skate culture alive.
Show some love and support to the guys at ATB by visiting their shop-

Monday – Friday: 11am – 6pm
Saturday: 10am – 6pm
Sunday: 12pm – 5.30pm

As well as skateboarders, BMX & scooter riders, skate shops, skate parks, roller disco nights, and an amazing campaign for a 'proper' skate park, we also have a fantastic Rollerderby team. Our local team is amazing and we should all be supporting them and the sport itself, as the women that play roller derby serve as excellent role models!

Roller derby is more than just circling around on skates. It’s a fast, sometimes aggressive and very addictive sport. It’s great to watch and is a sport all about fun and fitness, a sport that doesn't discriminate and any body shape is an asset and it's a sport where you can embrace your own identity (some of the names given to individual players and teams are awesome)!
If this sounds like something you would like to be involved in and you live locally then click here  to find out more about joining the league
Our (Swindon) local league is ‘Wiltshire Roller Derby’ which is an all female sports league based here in Swindon. Wiltshire Roller Derby is Wiltshire’s only roller derby league and the league has been together since March 2012.
They train extremely hard to compete against other leagues both locally and nationally.
Roller derby is all about fun, friendship and self growth and Wiltshire Roller Derby are dedicated to getting more women into sport and helping them to lead a more active lifestyle.
All of the training, planning and organising is done by the skaters, which they have to fit in between the skating and their day to day lives. Everybody involved with Wiltshire Roller Derby is very committed and just like other roller derby teams, a lot of people are putting in a lot of time, effort and their own money to grow the sport.

Main League training sessions are every Sunday from 6 - 8pm and Tuesday  8 - 10pm at Nova Hreod College in Swindon.
Regular 12 week beginners sessions are held on Thursday evenings from 7 - 8:30pm at Isambard Community School in Swindon.

As a community we need to make sure we are fighting for our skate scene, because it's an activity for young people to thrive, keep active, learn new skills and meet new people. It's community groups like SNAPS that are fighting endlessly for this.

SNAPS is a strongly established community group based in the heart of Swindon, campaigning for a new, modern user designed skate park to built in the area. A 'concrete paradise' where Swindon's urban culture can thrive and be proud of.
There have been so many occasions where I have heard people say things like "the youth of today wouldn't misbehave or hang around in big groups outside shops if they had somewhere to go". This is a statement that I myself, and I'm sure many others agree with, in the sense that if there were exciting places to hang out, exhilarating things to do, then maybe our youth would be a whole lot happier. I mean, we all tend to do random things when we are faced with utter boredom. So lets change that. Let's give young people more things to do. Lets create places where they actually would enjoy being. Let's create activities that they would actually like to take part in.
Which links me nicely to this..
Imagine..
An exciting place where young people can go to express their culture, be themselves, socialise, and develop/learn skating skills.
Obviously this isn't going to solve every problem facing the youth, but it's definitely a great start! It's ideas like this that keep our communities thriving. When a group of people decide to make a change, and bring a positive new project to their home town. This is definitely one of those life changing projects, that will see a lot of youths much happier. This project has even been backed by superstar DJ Fatboy Slim when he performed at the Oasis Swindon.

Due to the current economic climate SNAPS cannot rely on donations from local sources such as Swindon Borough Council, so are aiming to raise funds themselves as well as applying for lottery grants and corporate sponsorship.

Politicians and world leaders pay tribute to Margaret Thatcher after her death

Politicians and world leaders have been paying tribute to Margaret Thatcher, also known as the "Iron Lady", the first woman to become British prime minister, who died today aged 87. Here's what they had to say-
The Queen, In a statement from Buckingham Palace, said she was sad to hear the news of Lady Thatcher's death and would be sending a private message of sympathy to the family.
David Cameron (Prime Minister) wrote his first reaction on twitter: "It was with great sadness that l learned of Lady Thatcher's death. We've lost a great leader, a great Prime Minister and a great Briton."
He went on to say: "She didn't just lead our country; she saved our country, and I believe she'll go down as the greatest British peacetime prime minister."
Barack Obama (American President) "the world has lost one of the great champions of freedom and liberty, and America has lost a true friend".
Nick Clegg (The Deputy Prime Minister) saidshe was "of the defining figures of modern British politics and whatever side of the political debate you stand on, I think no-one would deny she left a lasting imprint on the country she served as prime minister".
Ed Miliband (The leader of the opposition, Labour party) described her as "the crucial figure of that era", saying: "The Labour Party disagreed with much of what she did and she will always remain a controversial figure. But we can disagree and also greatly respect her political achievements and her personal strength." he also said, "I send my deep condolences to Lady Thatcher’s family, in particular Mark and Carol Thatcher."
Not all tributes showed deep sadness though as David Hopper, general secretary of the Durham Miners’ Association (an ex-miner, who turned 70 today, that had spent all of his working life at Wearmouth Colliery) had this to say- “It looks like one of the best birthdays I have ever had. “There’s no sympathy from me for what she did to our community. She destroyed our community, our villages and our people."

Ceremonial funeral
Thatcher will be given a ceremonial funeral with military honors, British prime minister David Cameron's office said in a statement .
Her final journey will take her from Parliament in Westminster to St. Paul's Cathedral, in an event that will fall just one step short of a full state funeral.
State funerals are generally reserved for monarchs, though they differ little. The last non-royal to receive a state funeral was Winston Churchill, in recognition of his leadership as Britain's prime minister during World War II.
It is understood that Thatcher had been consulted on the details of the service, which is expected to reflect her love of Elgar. There will be no public lying in state at her request, it is understood.

Encouraging Hobbies

I believe it’s important to encourage young people to further their hobbies because many things that start out as a little hobby can lead to a great future.
Take doodling for example-  Hello Kitty is a global brand, or Jon Burgerman-http://jonburgerman.com/ These artists can be found on wallpaper, stationary, trainers, you name it, the sky is the limit.
For me as a parent and a trustee for a youth charity, I really do see the importance of inspiring young artists to get creative and not feel discouraged because being creative isn't necessarily academic and most schools are driven by achieving in academia rather than in a creative discipline.

If any of you out there are inspiring artist and would like your work published, then why not send in some art work that depicts a moment in your life. Click here for more info or have a read about the ‘My Story’ project through some of the press releases below-
